WHAT DOES TOASTMASTERS MEMBERSHIP OFFER?
Opportunities for growth and self-improvement in the areas of public speaking and leadership in the company of positive, friendly, and supportive people.
Each Toastmaster competes against his or her own past record. Toastmasters reject the concept of succeed or fail . . . Toastmasters work together and support one another with feedback and constructive analysis for speech assignments as well as for leadership contributions to the conduct of meetings, trainings, and educational activities.
Toastmasters meetings and activities are designed to provide growth opportunities for the novice as well as the most accomplished speaker.
Toastmasters learn by doing. Every meeting is conducted from an agenda. Members rotate the designated roles week to week so that everyone gets chance to fill meeting roles. Each meeting also offers opportunities for participation by others not on the agenda who may be called upon to make a short, extemporaneous speech on a given topic or to provide technical assistance such as timing of presentations.
Toastmasters grow and improve by speaking regularly, but each Toastmaster sets his or her own pace for progress through all speech and leadership assignments.
New Toastmasters start their journey by preparing and presenting ten speeches that are outlined and explained in the Competent Communicator Manual* while assisting in the conduct of meetings. These ten speeches are designed to help the new Toastmaster develop or improve her/his knowledge and use of basic verbal and non-verbal communication skills. After completing these ten projects, the member earns the designation of Competent Communicator(CC). New Toastmasters are also encouraged to complete the ten leadership projects outlined in the Competent Leadership Manual* to earn the additional designation of Competent Leader(CL).
Competent Communicators can also further their training by completing well defined speaking/ presentation assignments from any of the 15 Toastmaster approved advanced manuals.
Part of the new member kit provided to every new Toastmaster.
** Titles of some of the advanced manuals include: ‘Persuasive Speaking’, ‘Humorously Speaking’, ‘Communicating on
TV,’ ‘Interpersonal Communication,’ ‘Storytelling,’ ‘Speeches by Management,’ and ‘Technical Presentations.’
At Fees You Can Afford…
Because Toastmasters ‘learn by doing’, membership costs for Toastmasters training are significantly less than the fees charged by other organizations that also offer speech and/or leadership training.
